SÃO BERNARDO DO CAMPO (Brazil), Oct 30 — Leftist challenger Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said today he was “confident in the victory of democracy,” in a dig at far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro as he cast his ballot in a polarising presidential runoff.

The 77-year-old ex-president, who has attacked Bolsonaro as a “little dictator,” said he would seek to heal a divided nation if elected: “One of the dreams that made me become a candidate in this election was to restore peace among Brazilians,” he told journalists, dressed in a white shirt and surrounded by white-clad allies after voting in Sao Bernardo do Campo, the southeastern city where he got his start as a union leader. — AFP
