Oh my my, the timeless combination of lust and money – a pairing as old as time, or at least as old as someone convincing themselves that this time, it’s real. And so, the world spins on, with stories like that of 49-year-old Lee, a man who, for a fleeting moment, thought he’d hit the jackpot in both departments – only to end up several thousand ringgit lighter.
The story begins as many cautionary tales do these days: an online ad, a pretty face, and a promise so outrageous that it had to be true.
Lee, minding his own business, stumbled upon an ad featuring a photo of an attractive woman. But this was no ordinary woman; this was someone seeking a sperm donor... with benefits. And not just any benefits – a cool RM1 million if he managed to impregnate her.
Now, before we all roll our eyes and mutter, "Haven’t we seen this movie before?" (Yes, Indecent Proposal comes to mind), let’s pause to appreciate Lee’s situation. Here was a man, offered a dream scenario that only the internet could concoct: become RM1 million richer and father a child in one smooth, legally-binding transaction. What could go wrong?
Everything, apparently.
Enter Chen, the alleged temptress from Singapore (because the scam wouldn’t be quite as seductive if she were local, right?). Armed with WhatsApp and what Lee believed was a lawyer on speed dial, Chen began weaving her web. She would, of course, require him to make a small sincerity payment – just RM1,000 – to ensure he was committed to the task. After all, this is serious business, and one doesn’t simply knock someone up for a million bucks without proving they’re in it for the long haul.
So, like any man in pursuit of a lottery ticket wrapped in human form, Lee forked over the RM1,000. In return, he was handed a contract, presumably filled with all the legal jargon necessary to make this bizarre arrangement feel legitimate. Not just a token of his commitment, but a roadmap to his first payment of RM300,000, promised to land in his account once the ink dried.
Oh, but the devil’s in the details, isn’t it? That RM300,000 came with a tiny little caveat: a handling fee of RM24,000. Now, some might have raised an eyebrow at this point, but not our man Lee. No, he was far too deep in the allure of it all to balk at this minor inconvenience. Off went RM24,000 into the void, and just like that, the indecent proposal started smelling a lot like a scam.
It was only when an additional RM30,000 was demanded that Lee's lightbulb finally flickered on. Alas, the RM25,000 was long gone, along with any notions of fathering a millionaire baby.
The lesson here? Well, there are plenty. First, the old adage still rings true: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Second, sperm donation for cash is not a gig listed on reputable job sites. And lastly, as much as Indecent Proposal might have planted some dangerous ideas in our heads, real life is rarely so generous.
It’s easy to scoff at Lee’s misfortune, to wonder how anyone could fall for such an elaborate scheme. But the truth is, we’re all just one too-good-to-be-true moment away from doing something equally questionable. So, let’s be kind. After all, in the age of the internet, we’ve all been a click away from disaster.
But perhaps the most important lesson of all is this: if you’re going to chase money and lust in the same breath, you’d better have deep pockets – or at the very least, a strong WiFi connection for all those lawyerly WhatsApp messages.
As for Lee, he’ll probably be sticking to more traditional methods of wealth generation from now on. Maybe the lottery or, you know, an actual job.
