The Royal Malaysian Customs Department in Perlis made significant seizures in separate operations involving three vehicles and smuggled goods, valued at over RM3.1 million. The first confiscation took place on September 26, when authorities seized a Mazda 2.0 SKYACTIV Sedan, estimated to be worth RM50,000, with an additional RM78,500 in taxes due, during a routine inspection. On the same day, customs officers intercepted a Toyota Camry worth RM55,000 with RM86,570 in unpaid taxes. Both vehicles were found overstaying their allowed time in a Customs Main Area (KUK), violating the 90-day limit permitted under the Customs Duty (Exemption) Order 2017.
The most significant seizure came on October 1, when a luxury Porsche 982 Cayman GT4 RS, valued at RM1 million with taxes totaling RM1.9 million, was confiscated at the Perlis Customs Complex. Initial investigations revealed that all three vehicles had exceeded their authorized stay within the KUK, breaching Malaysian customs laws under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967. Authorities are continuing to investigate the case.
In a related crackdown on illegal smuggling activities, Perlis Customs officers also seized various types of cigarettes and alcoholic beverages worth RM18,127 in two separate inspections in September. These goods, believed to have been smuggled, were confiscated in operations in Perak, as the Customs Department intensified its efforts to clamp down on illegal activities.
Perlis Customs Director Ismail Hashim emphasized the department's ongoing commitment to enforcing customs regulations and preventing illegal trade in duty-free zones like Langkawi. The department has warned that stricter measures will be taken against offenders violating customs laws, ensuring that Malaysia’s borders are protected from smuggling and tax evasion activities.
These recent seizures highlight the proactive efforts of the Royal Malaysian Customs to uphold the law, safeguarding the nation’s revenue and maintaining order in duty-free areas. The investigations are ongoing, and further enforcement actions are expected in light of these developments.
