Luxury travel is fast becoming the new normal for Malaysians. According to new Trip.com data, searches by Malaysians for first and business class flights jumped 250% year-on-year in the first half of 2026.
That growth placed Malaysia at the top of all markets on the platform globally, at more than double the worldwide average. The lie-flat bed, the airport lounge and the gourmet meal on board are no longer occasional treats. For many, they are now the baseline of luxury travel.
The findings add to earlier Trip.com data on Malaysia’s growing tourism momentum.

Malaysia Leads Global Premium Flight Searches
For these travellers, the holiday begins the moment they board. A comfortable seat and a good meal at altitude are part of the trip, not just a way of getting there.
The same mindset is shaping hotel choices. Five-star hotel searches by Malaysians grew 72% year-on-year over the same period.

Millennials and Gen X Drive Luxury Travel Demand
The travellers behind this shift are mostly Millennials and Gen X, many of whom are at the height of their earning power. Globally, close to one in two five-star hotel bookers on Trip.com are aged between 35 and 49.
The same age group also makes up more than 40% of travellers who booked premium class flights. For them, the quality of a luxury travel experience is worth more than the price tag attached to it.

Five-Star Stays Closer to Home
Many of the most sought-after premium stays among Malaysians are right here at home. Bookings for Trip.com’s Platinum Luxury Hotels climbed 102% year-on-year in the first half of 2026.
Three Malaysian properties were recognised on the Trip.Best 2026 Asia 100 list of Luxury Hotels: The Ritz-Carlton Langkawi, Four Seasons Resort Langkawi and Mandarin Oriental Desaru Coast.
It reflects how travellers are rediscovering domestic destinations with a more discerning eye. Luxury travel, it turns out, does not always require a long-haul flight.
Personalised Experiences Redefine Luxury Travel
Globally, searches for luxury and spa experiences rose 170% year-on-year, while custom tour bookings on Trip.com grew 600%. Malaysia is among the top five source markets for custom tours, alongside Mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan.
Trips are now planned around a feeling rather than a place. Think of a couple building an itinerary around a mountain wellness retreat, or a solo traveller choosing a bespoke tour for deeper immersion.
Trip.com’s Black Diamond members show this clearly. They book nearly 20 times more than the average traveller and spend at least 14 days per trip on average, going deeper into a destination rather than skimming across it.

Concerts and Live Events Shape Travel Plans
Live events tell perhaps the most vivid story. Across Asia Pacific, 63% of travellers have already crossed a border to attend a concert, and 66% say they would.
Live entertainment packages on Trip.com recorded triple-digit growth in 2025. Entire trips are now planned backwards from a single night, whether it is a concert, a race or a festival, much like the rise of K-culture inspired travel among Malaysians.
Malaysians Are Investing More in Travel
What we are seeing in the data is a traveller who has made a very deliberate decision about what matters. In a climate where spending decisions are being scrutinised more than ever, Malaysian travellers are not cutting back on travel, they are investing more deeply in it. The quality of the experience, from the very first moment of the journey to the last, is what they are chasing.
