PAPAR: A 57-year-old motorcyclist died on the spot after being hit by a car along the Pan Borneo Highway at Km 13, Jalan Lama Papar-Kota Kinabalu, on Friday night.

District Police Chief DSP Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka said the 8.30pm incident occurred when a Nissan Almera driven by a 36-year-old man heading towards Kampung Padawan from Kota Kinabalu crashed into the motorcycle during a heavy downpour.

Based on initial investigations, he said, the car was travelling on the left lane when its driver suddenly spotted the victim on his motorcycle in front.

“Due to the short distance between both vehicles, the driver could not brake or avoid in time which led to the car rear-ending the motorcycle,” he added.

He said the impact caused the victim to be thrown off his motorcycle with both vehicles ending up in a nearby drain.

Kamaruddin said the victim, who was heading towards Benoni, suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead by Papar Hospital medical officers.

The victim’s body was then sent to the Papar Hospital’s Forensics Unit for post-mortem and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
