M’sia, S’pore to cooperate on battling cybercrimes: Fahmi

SINGAPORE – The memorandum of understanding to promote cooperation on data, cybersecurity, and the digital economy signed by Putrajaya and Singapore aims to eliminate or reduce the cross-border threat of online scams and data theft, among others.

Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil told a press conference here today that both nations will be exchanging data to ensure greater cybersecurity for both countries.

“We will exchange information on important issues such as ongoing cross-border data protection involving persons or organisations.

“This is what we are studying in detail, especially in terms of scams and data theft, where the criminals are not located in the country, but are in another country. This will allow enforcement agencies from both countries to work together while forging stronger ties.

“We are looking at the threat these actors pose, as they try to hack into our databases in Malaysia every week. The issue is that we have not identified where they are located, and this area is where the cooperation we have needs to increase,” said Fahmi.

Earlier, Fahmi had signed the agreement on behalf of Malaysia with the republic’s Communications and Information Minister Josephine Teo.
