Group of anglers didn’t realise their boat had drifted across maritime border during strong winds.

WHAT started as a leisurely fishing trip with lunch on board ended with an unexpected visit from Singapore’s marine police after a group of Malaysian anglers drifted across the maritime border without realizing it.

The fishing enthusiasts only discovered they had entered Singaporean waters when approached by patrol officers from the neighboring country’s police force.

According to a TikTok video uploaded by user @Fizreeajie, he and his companions were enjoying their midday meal on the boat while waiting for fish to bite when strong winds and powerful currents slowly carried their vessel away from its original position.

The group remained completely unaware of their movement until Singapore’s marine police arrived to inform them they had crossed the maritime boundary.

“We were enjoying our lunch on the boat and didn’t realise the boat had drifted into Singapore. It’s windy season now, didn’t notice the boat moving. Anyway, the Singapore police gave us good treatment. Thank you, officers,” he wrote in the video caption.

What caught attention in the video was the courteous and professional manner displayed by the Singapore marine police officers, who approached the situation with understanding rather than aggression.

The officers politely requested identification cards from each person on board to conduct routine verification checks.

One of the marine police officers revealed that Malaysian fishing boats entering Singapore’s maritime boundaries is actually a common daily occurrence.

“If you enter accidentally, we don’t have a problem. Because some boats deliberately run (from authorities) and all that. There’s nothing serious here, we just want to check,” the officer explained.

“Since you’ve entered our waters (territory), we will check and advise you to leave. “That’s all,” he added reassuringly.

The encounter took a humorous turn when the marine officer engaged in friendly conversation with the fishermen, joking about their marital status and fishing permissions.

“Are you two married yet? That’s great that your wives allow you to go fishing. My wife is different when I go fishing, her face turns sour. I used to fish often in Endau and also went to Desaru,” the officer shared with a laugh.

The light-hearted exchange highlighted the cordial relationship between authorities from both countries when handling routine maritime incidents.

The incident serves as a timely reminder for fishing enthusiasts to remain vigilant about weather conditions and their vessel’s position, especially during the current windy season when strong winds and currents can cause boats to drift unexpectedly.

Maritime experts advise anglers to:

  • Regularly check their GPS position
  • Set anchor properly before engaging in activities on board
  • Monitor weather forecasts before heading out
  • Remain alert to environmental conditions even while on board
  • Understand maritime boundary locations

The friendly handling of the situation by Singapore’s marine police demonstrates the professional cooperation between Malaysian and Singaporean maritime authorities in managing accidental border crossings.

Such incidents, while requiring official checks and procedures, are typically resolved amicably when involving genuine accidents rather than deliberate violations.

The video has garnered significant attention on social media, with many users appreciating both the humor of the situation and the professional conduct displayed by the Singaporean officers.
