Two men were detained by enforcement officers from the Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ) on Sunday (22 March) following the discovery of homosexual conduct during a routine patrol in a secluded area of the state.

In a statement issued today, JAINJ said the incident occurred at around 6 PM when four of its enforcement officers were conducting a scheduled van patrol aimed at preventing immoral activities in the district.

According to the statement, the officers noticed a car parked in a secluded location while approaching the area from behind. The vehicle’s rear windscreen was heavily tinted, making it difficult to see if anyone was inside.

“Although no occupants were visible at first, the enforcement officers observed that the vehicle was rocking and swaying. The engine and air-conditioning were also running,” JAINJ said.

For safety reasons, the officers did not immediately exit their patrol van. Instead, they manoeuvred the vehicle to the front of the parked car. The front windscreen was not tinted, allowing officers to see the steering wheel clearly, however, both the driver’s and front passenger seats were unoccupied.

The officers then disembarked from the van and approached the vehicle from the driver’s side. While the side window was not fully tinted, visibility into the vehicle remained limited.

Two individuals detained

Further inspection revealed that the left and right rear windows were less tinted, enabling officers to observe what JAINJ described as inappropriate conduct taking place inside the car.

The two individuals were subsequently detained to assist with investigations under relevant religious and legal provisions. JAINJ did not disclose further details about the individuals involved, citing ongoing investigations.

The department reiterated its commitment to continuing regular patrols and enforcement operations, particularly during festive periods, to uphold public order and moral standards within the state.
