Recently, the Ministry of Transportation has started integrating road tax and driver’s licenses into the digital world, where one no longer has to have a physical copy on them.

As these changes still being relatively new, many Malaysians might not know of this and may end up confused.

Netizen, Heng See Lin, took to her Facebook page to showcase what she assumed to be our country’s new 2024 driving license (LMM) made of paper, not realising that it’s actually just an LMM renewal slip.

She wrote, “2021 driving license vs 2024 driving license. Anthony Loke Siew Fook, are you serious?”

She added that the officer at the Road Transport Department (JPJ) who issued her the LMM renewal slip had reminded her to laminate it out of fear that it might tear or go missing.

In the image she showcased, her 2021 driving license could be seen in comparison with the paper LMM renewal slip.

Her comparison led many to believe that the paper LMM renewal slip was indeed a 2024 driving license, and condemned the government for attempting to ‘save money’ by issuing paper driving licenses. It is important to point out that this is NOT TRUE.

Thankfully, there were some who pointed out that the piece of paper was, in fact, a LMM renewal slip and that her driving license would be in the JPJ application.

“That’s not a license. It’s written largely there already, renewal slip. Driving license is now in digital form, using the app.”

“There’s a difference between a driving license renewal slip and a driving license, sister.”

For those who may not know, renewed driving licenses can be seen and are displayed on the JPJ application, though those who do not use smartphones or prefer having something physical on them can opt to keep an LMM renewal slip to show during roadblocks or police stops.

Hence, this is probably why the JPJ officer had informed Heng to laminate her LMM renewal slip to prevent damage.
