The Menu Rahmah is an initiative set by the government to help the B40 community with their basic essentials. With the cost of living rising in Malaysia, ordinary folks are facing the increasingly difficult conundrum of finding an affordable place to eat when going out. This initiative is one of many under the Payung Rahmah campaign, which includes other programmes such as Bakul Rahmah, Kafe Rahmah, Jualan Murah Rahmah, and Barangan Rahmah.

M’sian cake seller sells sliced cake for RM5, said she’s inspired by the Menu Rahmah initiative

Just recently, a baker named Azrehan Zakaria has taken her enthusiasm online, sharing that she has decided to sell her baked treats at her car boot for only RM5 per slice. Locals who visit her mobile ‘pop-up’ store have the liberty to choose cakes from over 11 flavours and this unique venture has led her to a sell-out within 2 hours!

Speaking to local media outlet, mStar, Azrehan shared that prior to selling her baking goods, one of her hobbies is to go cafe hopping.

“I love going to cafes and trying out their pastries and cakes”, she said.

However, one thing that she has noticed is that the prices set by cafes for a slice of cake can cost at least RM10. While she understood that the cafe would need to mark up their prices as they need to cover the expenses of running a cafe, Azrehan realised that many people would like to sample a variety of cake flavours but are unable to spend so much on pastries alone.

Adding on that she was inspired by the government’s initiative to help locals with their struggles, she has decided to price her cakes at RM5 per slice so that everyone has the chance to indulge in baked treats. Following her mobile bakery journey, the response she has received for her Menu Rahmah inspired dessert was very positive with owners from dessert shops and cafes purchasing in bulk from her.

Despite pricing all her cakes at RM5 per slice, one thing that Azrehan refuses to compromise is the ingredients she uses to bake her delectable cakes. She revealed that while the pricing she set is lower than average, she guarantees that the ingredients used for her baking venture are premium.

Azrehan added that the support she has garnered from this experience has been a great encouragement for her baking ventures and she hopes that one day, she’ll be able to have her own cafe that serves high quality cakes at an affordable price!
