A Malaysian woman is questioning whether she has failed in life after she started working as a street vendor despite having a Degree in Chemistry which she earned with a JPA (Public Service Department) scholarship.

Taking to her TikTok account, izzti.is_, who is in her 30s, explained that she couldn’t build a career with her Degree in Chemistry and has since resorted to becoming a street vendor.

She wrote, “(I’m) already (in my) 30s. Chemistry Degree holder via JPA scholarship, but no career. I’m not good a business but I’m just trying my luck. Now, I’m a street vendor. Have I failed?”

Many have since pointed out that she didn’t fail, but instead, our country failed her. They also shared their own stories of how they’ve resorted to taking any job they can despite holding Degrees in impressive fields.

“I’m already in my 30s also. (I studied) Petroleum Engineering with MARA loan but I have no career. I don’t know how to run a business but I’m still trying my luck. Now, I’m a full-time Grab driver. On the side, I do PC and laptop serving and repairs part-time and I customise motorcycles.”

“I’m a nuclear engineer, now I’m running a biscuits, cakes and pastries business. I’m a part-time seamstress. You think you’ve failed? I also don’t know so I’m just going to laugh.”

“You didn’t fail, but it’s a huge loss for the country. There are so many graduates who are unable to contribute their expertise and energy in their respective fields. Plus, you got a JPA scholarship. Nowadays, many have run away from their respective industries.”

“Yet, the government is still ‘encouraging youngsters to take up STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)’ but they’re not opening up job opportunities.”
