A car is usually the second-biggest purchase in one’s life, just behind a house. However, unlike real estate, many wouldn’t classify a car as an investment.
Instead, cars are categorised as a liability as a vehicle is touted to lose value as soon as you leave the showroom. Hence, that is why spending on a car that’s within your means is important.

For illustration purposes
With that in mind, a Malaysian recently earned the ire of netizens online after he complained about the high maintenance fee for his 2020 Honda City.
Posting on the Honda City 2022 Malaysia Facebook group, the man shared the receipt of his vehicle’s 20,000km maintenance service, which amounted to RM420. The car owner wrote,
“Service 20,000km. What can I exclude from this? RM420 is too ‘hard’ ”

A screenshot of the post was then reshared by X user @annazrulan on the social media platform, garnering over 218,000 views and 765 likes as of the time of writing.
@annazrulan then chimed in on the man’s complaints, saying that he shouldn’t expect service maintenance for his Honda City to be the same as a Perodua Axia.
Furthermore, @annazrulan also asserted,
“This is the problem when you believe those TikTok videos claiming that an RM2,500 salary can get you a Honda.”

In the X post’s replies, others also chimed in with their thoughts, with many ridiculing the man for expecting a cheaper maintenance fee for his Honda City. For reference, a 5th Generation Honda City starts at RM74,191 and goes all the way to RM86,561 when it was first launched in 2020.
One commenter said that if the man thinks RM420 is expensive, he shouldn’t be owning a Honda. Meanwhile, another commenter joked that if he wants a cheaper maintenance fee, the man should buy the oil filter, engine oil and others from Shopee and perform the maintenance himself.

Besides that, one commenter advised people to always consider after-sale service costs such as insurance, road tax and maintenance, stressing that cars are a commitment, not something you use once and dispose of.
