Eating with his family, including a child under the age of 2, at the restaurant in Kampung Baru, the man also complained about what he considered an expensive price for the dishes that they ate there.

He shared,

“This is the 1st time I got ‘fined’ RM5 at an eatery for having a messy table (my child is under the age of 2).

“Stir fry kailan with salted fish, omelette, siakap 3 rasa (3-flavoured sea bass), no Tom Yum, for RM55. Super expensive. Plus the ‘fine’ too.”

Disappointed, the man asked whether an eatery is allowed to charge customers extra for leaving a table messy and whether he could report the matter to the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN).

In the comments, many Malaysians were perplexed by the arbitrary RM5 charge for having messy tables, though many think that the RM55 price was reasonable.

One commenter said that this was the 1st time they ever heard about eateries ‘fining’ customers for having messy tables. They added that the father could report to KPDN if the eatery didn’t have any notice about the charge visible on the premises.

Meanwhile, another commenter joked that the eatery owner must have been a prefect when they were at school, hence why the arbitrary charge for messy tables.

Besides that, one commenter shifted the blame to the family itself for not having the decency to clear the table after eating and such a ‘fine’ is justifiable as the eatery’s staff had to clean the table afterwards.
