Kamarunzaman was charged under Section 435 of the Penal Code or committing mischief with fire, which carries a maximum jail sentence of 14 years imprisonment and a fine if convicted.

Deputy public prosecutor Wan Nurul Amalina Abu Hanifah prosecuted, while Kamarunzaman was represented by Muhamad Ridzuan Umar.

During the proceedings, bail was initially set at RM12,000 but Umar pleaded for a lower amount, saying that Kamarunzaman had to provide for his wife and parents.
