To ensure stable supply and affordable pricing of eggs, Malaysia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS) has announced the launch of a new category of eggs — the “Special Grade Eggs”, which will be sold at a more wallet-friendly price.
According to Sin Chew Daily, in an official statement, the ministry said industry players have reached a consensus to roll out this new grade, with prices aimed at easing the burden on consumers.
Egg subsidy mechanism to be revamped starting tomorrow
The eggs will be made available nationwide at competitive prices through various government-linked sales outlets, including the Agro Madani Sales and Rahmah Sales Campaign, operated by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) and Farmers’ Organization Authority (LPP).
Alongside the new egg grade, the government will also implement a restructured egg subsidy policy starting August 1, aimed at improving sustainability and efficiency in resource allocation.
Between February 2022 and December 2024, nearly RM2.5 billion in subsidies were allocated to support egg production. These subsidies were part of temporary measures introduced during the pandemic and global supply chain disruptions to help both the public and the egg industry.
As market conditions are gradually stabilising, the government is shifting toward a more comprehensive and targeted subsidy approach,” the statement read.
Enforcement to prevent price manipulation
To ensure that the initiative truly benefits consumers, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) will continue to enforce the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, to prevent unethical practices such as price manipulation and profiteering.
The government says these combined measures aim to safeguard food security while keeping essential items like eggs affordable for the rakyat.
