A Malaysian influencer was recently reported missing after his car was found submerged in a river, triggering a massive underwater search effort.

However, not only was he alive and well, but the influencer, Tengku Nizaruddin Bin Tengku Zainudin, was actually abroad while rescue teams were searching for his body.

In an official statement by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) in Muar, Johor, Nizaruddin’s younger brother, Tengku Abd Aziz, had lodged a police report claiming his “elder brother” had gone missing while heading to Muar to “fix his car.” During the search and rescue operation, police noticed inconsistencies in Abd Aziz’s statement and suspected that the disappearance had been staged.

It was later revealed that 38-year-old Nizaruddin had abandoned his wife’s car in the Tui River before fleeing to Thailand to remarry.

According to Kosmo, police confirmed that Abd Aziz had filed a false report and had conspired with his brother to fake the disappearance. Both individuals have since come forward to provide statements at the police station, and the case is now being investigated under:

  • Section 182 of the Penal Code – for providing false information to a civil servant
  • Section 109 of the Penal Code – for abetment

The search and rescue mission involved 77 officers, and if found guilty, the brothers could face up to six months in prison and a fine not exceeding RM2,000.
