A widower could only weep in court after the judge sentenced him to six months in prison for abusing a kitten at a laundromat.
This comes after the accused, Toh Teck Hooi, couldn’t pay the RM60,000 fine after pleading guilty to a charge of animal abuse, reported Sinar Harian.
What happened
According to the facts of the case, Toh allegedly threw a black male kitten against a wall and mattress several times before uploading a 59-second video of the act on social media.
The abuse took place at a laundromat in Taman Kajang Prima between 3.30am and 4am on April 2.
The next day, an Animal Welfare Officer from the Selangor Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) conducted an inspection at the scene.
An initial examination of the kitten found that its right hind leg was believed to have been injured as it showed signs of discomfort when touched.
The kitten also appeared inactive and weak.
Jailed 6 months
Toh was charged under Subsection 29(1)(a) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 and is punishable under Subsection 29(1) of the same act.
The subsection provides for a fine of between RM20,000 and RM100,000, a jail term of up to three years, or both, upon conviction.
The case was prosecuted by Mohd Sharif Sabran from DVS, while Toh was unrepresented.
Toh pleaded guilty before Judge Khainur Aleeza Ismail and was ordered to be jailed six months as he was unable to pay RM60,000 in fines.
