There’s a popular saying that goes, “The love of money is the root of all evil”. For some, that includes robbing their own family members just to get their hands on cold, hard cash.

This was exactly what one man did towards his wife in Bentong as he was scheming to lay claim to insurance money by staging a fake robbery at his own home.

M’sian man fakes robbery at own home

According to NST, the incident took place at the man’s house located in Taman Hijau, Karak near Bentong on Monday (July 17).

In a statement by Bentong district police chief Superintendent Zaiham Mohd Kahar, the robbery occurred when three men wearing masks went into the house at about 3.05pm and threatened the man’s wife, who was all alone at the time.

“The robbers, who came with parangs, ransacked the house and drove off with a Perodua Alza which was parked in front of the house. Aside from that, they also stole RM16,000 worth of jewellery.

“She later told police that her husband (the suspect), mother, and kids were at a relative’s house when the robbery happened, adding that he often does charity work at a temple in Karak,” he said.

Wanted money from insurance claim

Zaiham said police later received a public tip-off and acted quickly to arrest the robbers, where they managed to nab two 33-year-old Malaysian men, and a 24-year-old foreigner in Nilai, Negri Sembilan.

“Police managed to recover the stolen Perodua Alza and discovered that the woman’s husband (suspect) and the two local suspects had prior criminal records for robbery. Upon questioning the trio, they realised that the victim’s husband had staged the robbery to claim insurance money,” he said.

He added all four suspects have been remanded until July 24 and that the case is being probed under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for armed robbery.
