While everyone dreams of giving their car a stylish look with spanking new accessories and upgrades, most would usually think twice as the cost that comes with it is quite high.

Local police are currently on the hunt for a man who fled from a car workshop without paying for the upgrades he made to a BMW and injured three people in the process.

In a statement by Johor Baru (North) police chief Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh, he said police were alerted of the matter through a police report lodged by a 29-year-old mechanic who owned a car workshop in Taman Setia Tropika.

In the report, the mechanic claimed that the 40-year-old suspect came to the workshop on Sept 7 and asked for new tyres, sports rims, and other accessories to be fitted into a BMW, which amounted to RM38,000.

After the work was completed, the suspect returned to the workshop on Tuesday (Sept 10) with another man and asked to give the car a test drive.

To avoid the suspect from absconding on payment, the mechanic told one of his workers to accompany the pair.

During the test drive, the suspect complained of noise coming out from the car boot and asked the worker to check on it.

Unfortunately, it proved to be a costly mistake as the worker got sprayed with pepper spray when he opened the car door and was left behind.

Upon witnessing the pepper spray attack, the mechanic tried to stop the suspect from leaving by clinging to the BMW’s side mirror at a traffic light junction but nearly got hit.

Another worker chased after the suspect on a motorcycle but the suspect allegedly crashed into him deliberately.

The worker who got pepper sprayed suffered eye irritations, while the other worker who tried chasing after the suspect broke his right arm and injured his knees and wrists.

As for the mechanic, he sustained an elbow injury and lost and estimated RM43,000 due to the incident.

Balveer said the case is now being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, Section 324 for voluntarily causing harm with dangerous weapons and Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.
