
A 29-year-old local man was arrested after he allegedly drove a Mitsubishi Triton recklessly and dangerously along the North-South Expressway in Penang, causing multiple vehicles to be hit.
According to a police statement by Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief ACP Nik Aminuddin Raja Abdullah, police received information about the accident at around 10:05am on June 8.
The case involved a four-wheel-drive Mitsubishi Triton.
Allegedly drove dangerously before hitting several vehicles
Initial investigations found that the suspect was believed to have been driving recklessly and dangerously from Sungai Dua towards Penang.
He allegedly hit several vehicles along the route.
The suspect was later stopped by members of the public at the Butterworth-Kulim Expressway (BKE), in front of a Caltex petrol station in Seberang Jaya, before being handed over to police officers who arrived at the scene.
Drugs allegedly found in sling bag
Police said further checks on the suspect found a sling bag worn on his body.
Upon inspecting the bag, police allegedly found one transparent plastic packet containing crystal-like substances suspected to be methamphetamine, weighing about 0.75g.
They also allegedly found another transparent plastic packet containing white granules suspected to be ketamine, weighing about 2.38g.
Urine test positive for methamphetamine and morphine
A urine test conducted on the suspect found him positive for methamphetamine and morphine.
Police checks also found that the suspect had 15 previous drug-related records and two criminal records.
The suspect has since been arrested.
The drug case is being investigated under Section 12(3) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
He will be brought before the Bukit Mertajam Magistrate’s Court on June 9 for a remand application.
At the same time, police said the accident case is being investigated by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of IPD Seberang Perai Tengah under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
The section involves driving under the influence of drugs and causing a road accident.
Police are now tracing all victims and independent witnesses who were at the scene to assist in investigations.
Police also thanked members of the public who helped stop the suspect, adding that public cooperation is important in ensuring safety and public order.
