The man who went viral after allegedly stealing a woman’s iPhone before pretending to help her retrieve it and asking for ‘duit kopi’ has been sentenced to four months in prison.

According to Kosmo!, Muhammad Nazirul Jasmi, 33, pleaded guilty to the charge of committing the alleged extortion earlier this month at the Ayer Keroh Magistrates’ Court today (7 September).

Magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani sentenced him to four months’ imprisonment, backdated to the date of his arrest on 3 September.

He allegedly asked for RM200 after returning the phone

The incident reportedly took place at around 7.15pm on 1 September by the Melaka River near Kampung Morten, Melaka. Based on the facts of the case, the 36-year-old victim was with her younger sister when she realised that her iPhone 17 Pro Max was missing.

Nazirul allegedly approached the woman and told her that his friend was chasing the person who had taken her phone. He then allegedly returned the phone to her but asked for RM200 in ‘duit kopi’ in exchange.

The amount was reportedly later reduced to RM50.

However, the woman, who had become suspicious and frightened by the situation, refused to hand over the money as she wanted to make a police report instead.

Nazirul allegedly refused to provide his phone number and instead asked her for a smaller amount of RM10 or RM20.

The prosecution argued that the incident had caused fear to the victim, particularly as it took place at a popular tourist area. Deputy Public Prosecutor Syauqi Mardia Baharudin therefore urged the court to impose a heavier sentence.

Nazirul, who was unrepresented by a lawyer, pleaded for a lighter sentence, reportedly telling the court that he needed to support his mother.

The court ultimately sentenced him to four months in prison under Section 385 of the Penal Code. The offence carries a maximum prison sentence of seven years, a fine, whipping, or any two of these punishments upon conviction.

His arrest came after the incident went viral

The case had previously attracted attention online after footage of the incident was uploaded to social media platform Threads. The viral footage allegedly showed the woman recounting how her phone went missing and how the man claimed to have helped retrieve it before asking for ‘duit kopi’.

Following the post, police reportedly managed to identify and locate the suspect. He was subsequently arrested on 3 September.
