The Tropical Research and Conservation Centre (TRACC Borneo) recently took to its Instagram page to seek the public’s assistance in identifying divers seen in a video ‘harassing’ a sea turtle, as well as the location in which the video was taken.

The marine conservation organisation, which aims to protect sea turtles and restore coral reefs, pointed out that the actions of the divers go against the regulations of the Sabah Wildlife Enactment 1997, should the incident have happened in Sabah.

They wrote, “Witnesses needed! We need your help! Who recognises these divers or this place? This video provides clear evidence of a violation of the Sabah Wildlife Enactment 1997. Sea turtles are completely protected by the law, and it is illegal to handle turtle eggs, hatchlings and adult turtles unless holding the title of an Honorary Wildlife Warden.”

“This showcased behaviour is deeply disturbing and concerning. If you have any hints about the origin of this video, please contact us or the Sabah Wildlife Department directly.”

In the video, a diver grabbed and held onto a sea turtle that was attempting to swim away, while other divers petted it and posed with it. The sea turtle tried to bite the divers but was unable to due to how it was being held.

While this was happening, a group of people doing an underwater walking tour could be seen observing the incident.
