Saving up for one’s retirement is extremely crucial as it can serve as a financial cushion when one is no longer able to work due to old age or illness.
A man is at a loss over what to do after he caught wind of his younger brother wanting to use their mother’s EPF savings for his own personal use.
Questionable intentions
In an anonymous post, the OP said his brother had been trying to convince their mother to withdraw from her hard-earned EPF savings so that he could have the funds to renovate the family home.
He added that their parents aren’t wealthy people and had worked hard all of their lives to ensure they could survive on their EPF funds during retirement.

The OP said his brother was looking to building a bigger bedroom for himself and adding another room which can be turned into a gaming room.
“He knows that my parents always wanted grandchildren, so he uses that to his advantage by telling them that when he gets married in the future, the extra room will be for his wife and children.
“But honestly, judging by how most women think nowadays, they probably wouldn’t want to live with their in-laws and would prefer living on their own after marriage.”

Already has his own home
The OP added that another issue was the fact that his brother actually owns his own condominium, which was purchased for him by their late grandfather.
He said his brother currently rents out the condominium to earn extra income while living with the rest of the family in a landed property.
“Objectively speaking, my brother’s in a good financial position and it doesn’t sit right with me that he wants to use our mum’s EPF funds for the bedroom and gaming room as the money’s supposed to be for her retirement.

“At the same time, I don’t know if I’m just being overly cautious or overthinking the situation,” he wrote before asking netizens for their thoughts.
Condemnation
In the comment section, netizens strongly opposed the idea of the OP’s brother getting his hands on their mother’s EPF savings and slammed him for his selfishness.

Some said the OP’s story serves as a cautionary tale to parents who often spoil their children rotten, adding that it will do more harm than good for both parties in the long run.
