When it comes to family and money, line boundaries often get blurred. For one Malaysian woman who saved up diligently for years, helping out a family member turned into her worst nightmare.
Taking to social media to vent her frustration, a woman shared how her attempt to help her elder brother out of a dire financial crisis completely backfired, leaving her RM50,000 poorer and branded as the “villain” of the family.
‘I’m your brother, would I cheat you?’
The woman, who works in Kuala Lumpur, shared that she had been living frugally for years with hopes of saving enough to buy her own home.
She described her elder brother, a married man with two children, as someone who loved putting on a grand show of generosity in front of relatives, despite frequently asking their mother for money to cover his issues.
He’s asked for money so many times that I suspect our family savings are already drained dry. Well, I wouldn’t know anyway, since none of it was ever for me,” she wrote.

Things took a dramatic turn when her brother called her out of nowhere, claiming his business was facing a severe cash flow crisis. He pleaded that if he couldn’t raise RM50,000 within days, his business would collapse, leaving him in deep debt.
“Help your brother just this once, I will definitely pay you back within six months. I’m your biological brother, would I cheat you?” he promised over the phone.
Her mother also joined in to persuade her, reminding her that they are family so she should help if she can, and asking what would happen to her brother’s two children if he collapsed.
Fully trusting her family, the woman eventually transferred her hard-earned RM50,000 to her brother.
Living large while dodging debt
Fast forward six months later, the deadline had arrived, but her brother acted as if the loan never existed.
When she finally pressed him about repayment, he casually brushed her off by stating that money was tight lately and asking for a bit more time.
However, not long after, she was shocked to see Facebook posts showing her brother and his family enjoying expensive staycations, dining at high-end restaurants, and showing off new smartphones.

I was completely stunned. After struggling with myself, I reminded him again that the money was loaned to help him out of an emergency, and now I needed it back.”
Instead of offering an apology, her brother turned defensive and snapped: “You’re a single woman with no husband and no kids, what do you need so much money for? I have a whole family to feed, can’t you be more understanding?”
To make matters worse, her mother called her shortly after, not to scold the brother, but to reprimand her for asking for the money to be returned.
The woman expressed her disbelief, unable to fathom how saving her own money and lending it purely to help him through an emergency suddenly turned her into the cruelest person in the family.
Humiliated at the family dinner table
The situation hit rock bottom during a family dinner a few months later. Hoping to settle the issue, she brought up the money once more.

Instead of working out a repayment plan, her brother publicly shamed her in front of all their relatives:
Her sister-in-law quickly backed him up, adding that since they are all family, there was no need to calculate money so clearly.
Rather than defending her, the relatives joined in, commenting that since she earns well and doesn’t have the heavy financial burdens her brother has, she should “help out the family more.”
Devastated and exhausted by the entire ordeal, the woman concluded her post on a bitter note:
One after another, everyone made me out to be the bad guy. Since things have come to this, I guess I really deserve it.”
Netizens weigh in
Her post quickly sparked outrage among netizens, with many advising her to take legal action or treat the RM50,000 as a painful fee to cut ties with toxic family members.
‘Never let people know you have savings. When people ask how much you have, the answer is always only 5,000.’

‘First of all, cut off all financial allowance to your family. Using 50k to cover up and seal off this bottomless pit is worth it. Let them witness what real ruthless behavior looks like. When your mom gets sick or anything in the future, let them all look for your brother, because this is clearly a biased family! Wave your sleeves, walk away clean with nothing holding you back, and have nothing to do with each other from now on!’
