As 2026 ushers in the Year of the Horse, it is only fitting that the spotlight is being shone on the famous Horsehead Nebula, located in the constellation Orion.

The Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) recently took to its Facebook page to showcase a stunning image of the nebula, captured by the Langkawi National Observatory (LNO).

The Horsehead Nebula

The agency shared:

“The Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) is a dark nebula in the Orion constellation, situated approximately 1,375 light-years from Earth.

“It consists of molecular hydrogen gas and incredibly dense interstellar dust, which absorbs light from the nebula behind it to create its iconic horse-head silhouette. This region is also a site of active star formation.”

MYSA further noted that the image was recorded in January 2024 from the LNO facility in Kedah, using a TMB152 telescope and a ZWO ASI2600MM camera.

According to Constellation Guide, the Horsehead Nebula remains one of the most popular astrophotography targets in the night sky. Its unusual shape and the vibrant surroundings of the Orion’s Belt region make it a firm favourite for amateur astronomers.

While it is relatively easy to locate (lying within Orion’s Belt, one of the most recognisable asterisms in the sky), it remains a rewarding yet challenging target for those using amateur telescopes.
