One of the signs that we are getting older is the increasing number of wedding invites. So when attending these weddings, it is always best to give an angpau to the newlyweds as it can help them kickstart their life.

Recently, a netizen shared their experience on the Facebook group KL Blow Water Station (KL娱乐站).

In the post, they wrote, “My cousin’s wedding banquet table costs RM2,200 and does not include drinks. Many of the guests who came only gave about RM150 to RM180.”

“Everything is expensive now. If you can’t give an angpau of more than RM300, don’t accept wedding invitations from others, and don’t cause them to lose money.”

Comments sparked backlash from others

The netizen’s take on wedding angpaus sparked a backlash from the other group members.

“Excuse me, did you organise a wedding dinner to earn money? If you did, you should write it on the wedding invite itself on how much a person needs to give for angpau money.”

“If the person can afford to come, okay, if the person cannot afford to come, then it’s your family’s problem. No one asked you to choose the RM2,200 set. If you can afford it, then you invite everyone. If you don’t have the capabilities to do so, don’t expect others to pay for you,” said a user.

“If you can’t afford it, don’t organise a wedding dinner. Despise those who think of their wedding dinners as business transactions,” said another.

Another user commented, “Why don’t you ask your cousin not to have wedding dinners if they can’t afford it? No matter how much the guest gives, it is genuinely from their heart. Please use your brain when speaking.”

On the other hand, some netizens gave them alternatives to cut costs. “If you don’t have enough money, you can always opt for a buffet-style,” commented a user.

Other users were very sarcastic with their comments. “It’s okay. Please take it as a lesson. You have the experience already, then next time you can choose a cheaper set,” said a netizen.
