A teenage boy studying at a religious school (tahfiz) in Johor admitted in court to breaking a junior’s wrist over the latter’s lack of vocal skills in delivering azan prayers.
According to NST, the 15-year-old boy was accused of voluntarily causing grievous hurt to a 14-year-old junior at a tahfiz prayer hall in Ayer Hitam at 1pm on June 30.
Teased junior over azan prayer delivery
Case of the facts stated that the victim was assigned to deliver the azan when the teen mocked his recitation by calling it ‘unmelodious’.

Angered by the insult, the victim proceeded to slap the teen, leading to both boys pushing each other.
During the scuffle, the teen pushed the victim, causing him to lose his balance and fall onto the ground and fracture his left wrist.
Ordered to do community service
The teen faced a maximum seven-year jail term and a fine upon conviction under Section 325 of the Penal Code if convicted.
After taking into account the teen’s guilty plea, plea in mitigation and a recommendation by the Social Welfare Department, Magistrate Mustaqim Sukarno ordered him to undergo 90 hours of community service, which must be completed within six months.

The teen was also instructed to enter into a good behaviour bond with a RM1,000 surety for three years, subject to conditions including a curfew from 9pm to 6am.
He was also ordered to report to the Social Welfare Department every two months during the bond period and undergo counselling with his teacher.
