Students’ minds work in mysterious ways, often surprising us with what they have up their sleeves. For teachers, these funny moments make the experience all the more entertaining.
In a recent video posted by teacher @salenasalleh, she shares an amusing moment on her TikTok that she encountered with a group of students in her class.
Pavinesh was teaching his classmates Tamil words and phrases
In the video, a group of Malay students is seen gathered around an Indian student, who is teaching them some Tamil words and references.
Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Salena shared that before this incident, she was telling her students a story about being featured on a local show, where she was interviewed about her mom and her mom’s 9 siblings, all of whom are fluent in Tamil.
Inspired by her story, Salena suggested to her Form 2 students that they learn Tamil from their Indian classmate, Pavinesh.
“I love you” in Tamil
The students followed Salena’s advise and approached Pavinesh to learn some basic Tamil phrases. However, their fun moment was cut short when Salena caught them in the act and asked what they were doing, causing the students to feel embarrassed and scatter.
Salena was surprised that her students had taken her advise seriously, thinking they were just talking casually.
Upon questioning them further, she found out that the Malay students were actually trying to learn how to say ‘I love you’ in Tamil from Pavinesh.
“Make the most of the opportunities and space you have with friends from different races. Learning a 3rd language is an advantage that helps you secure good jobs and make more friends. Enjoy your teenage years and cherish every moment!”

Learning some basic phrases in another language can come in handy. So, even if the students were trying to learn how to say ‘I love you’ for whatever reason, it still counts as picking up another language, don’t you think?
