A disciplinary action at a tahfiz centre has sparked attention after a warden was fined for physically punishing a student who ate bread without permission.

At the end of April, a 41-year-old warden, Mohd. Norzaizhul Zainudin, was found guilty of slapping a 16-year-old student who had eaten several slices of bread without asking.

The incident took place at the tahfiz centre’s hostel at around 3.45pm on 26 April.

Legal consequences

According to Kosmo!, Magistrate Sharifah Amirda Shasha Amir Sharifuddin handed down a fine of RM1,200 after Mohd. Norzaizhul pleaded guilty to the charge.

The warden was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which addresses causing hurt voluntarily.

This section carries a punishment of imprisonment for up to one year, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.

The Deputy Public Prosecutor Lim Zhan Yi managed the prosecution, while the accused was defended by lawyer Masliela Ismail.

Context of the incident

According to reports, the bread consumed by the student was part of the breakfast prepared for all tahfiz students for the next day.

The student claimed that the warden slapped him until he was injured after catching him eating the bread without permission.
