Previously, we shared how a school bus driver and TikToker, known as ‘Abang Bas’ was called out by the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM), Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri for showcasing kids in TikTok videos with inappropriate captions.
She has since urged the authorities to take action on the matter and accordingly, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) today revealed they have arrested the 24-year-old TikToker with over 600,000 followers.
‘Abang Bas’ was arrested by PDRM in Simpang Renggam earlier today
In a statement by Johor Police Chief CP M. Kumar A/L S. Muthuvelu today, he confirmed the Johor Police Contingent received a police report on the matter and has conducted an investigation on the viral video showing children on a bus driven by a man, known on TikTok as ‘Abang Bas’.
At 2.57am today, police officers from the Kluang District Police Headquarters arrested the suspect in Simpang Renggam, Johor and seized his smartphone, believed to be used to upload the videos on TikTok.
The Johor Police Chief further revealed that the case is being investigated under Section 15(a)(iii) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 and Section 15(2) of the Child Act 2001.
The suspect may face up to 10 years in jail, up to RM20,000 fine or both
Section 15 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 entails non-physical sexual assault on a child and its (a)(iii) subsection prescribes that it’s an offence for any person who for sexual purposes, repeatedly or constantly follows or watches or contacts a child by any means.
Should the suspect be charged and convicted under this provision, he may face up to 10 years in jail, up to RM20,000 fine or both.
Meanwhile, Section 15(2) of the Child Act 2001 prescribes that a picture of any child shall not be published in any newspaper or magazine or transmitted through any electronic medium. Those convicted under this provision may face up to RM10,000 fine, imprisonment of up to 5 years or both.
