A Malaysian has turned to social media for advice after admitting that her parents’ extended stays at her home have left her feeling exhausted and lacking privacy.
Comfortable with shorter visits
In a post, the woman said she did not mind having her parents stay for one or two weeks.
However, she found longer visits tiring, especially as she and her family had little privacy while they were around.
She also claimed that the family often had to pay for her parents’ meals whenever they went out together.
Parents allegedly follow them everywhere
According to her, her parents wanted to tag along almost everywhere, including visits to the clinic and wedding functions.
She added that they had apparently spoken about staying at her house for an even longer period, saying they wanted to spend time with their grandchildren.
However, the woman claimed they did not help much with caring for the children.
She and her spouse still had to manage the children despite having work commitments, while her parents only helped with pick ups about once a week when the couple went to the office.
Worried about hurting their feelings
In a follow up comment, the woman said she did not know how to bring up the issue with her parents.
She feared they would feel hurt if she explained too much, but was equally frustrated that they did not seem to recognise the family’s need for personal space.
One commenter, who identified herself as a mother and grandmother, said she felt saddened by the post. She argued that parents also had little privacy when raising their children, as they had to bring them everywhere, prepare meals, send them to school and care for them constantly.
Another commenter sympathised with the woman, saying having guests at home could make it difficult to rest, order food or spend time alone with one’s spouse and children. She suggested reducing the parents’ visits gradually by making plans outside the home, such as meeting friends at activities they could not join.
