Malaysian woman claims toilets in Kelantan are neither clean nor dry

Hana added that the issue extended to toilets at markets and eateries, with many netizens agreeing with her observations in the comments.

She also pointed out that most of the toilets had a similar fishy, earthy smell, which she suspected could be due to the water.

“After our trip to Kelantan, my conclusion is that the towns there are poorly planned and none of the toilets are clean. Most of the toilets also have the same smell, possibly because the water has a fishy, earthy smell,” she wrote.

Hana also highlighted the difference between the public toilets in Kelantan and those in Cyberjaya.

“Not a single toilet we visited was both clean and dry, whether at markets or eateries. Even the toilets at restaurants were dirty. The difference is quite noticeable when you compare them to the public toilets in Cyberjaya.”

Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Hana clarified that her post was never meant to look down on Kelantan or its people. Instead, she said it was about basic cleanliness, hygiene and public facilities that everyone deserves, no matter where they live.

“I think we need to stop treating legitimate criticism as an insult to an entire state. If we can acknowledge the problem, discuss it openly and push for better standards, that’s how we improve things.

“The people of Kelantan deserve clean, proper and well-maintained public toilets just as much as everyone else. This isn’t about attacking Kelantanese people — it’s about raising standards and encouraging accountability. Criticism should be an opportunity for improvement, not something to take personally.”

Netizens’ reactions

“I’m a Kelantanese who was born and raised elsewhere and only moved to Kota Bharu about 10 years ago. I agree. The water is one issue, but the truth is that most people here don’t know how to maintain cleanliness. Just look at how rubbish is scattered all over public places. Next time, it’s better to stop at a mosque instead. It’ll be clean.”

“As a Kelantanese, I agree with her. People in Kelantan can be quite defensive when faced with even the slightest criticism, often accusing others of being jealous. This is why the state struggles to progress, as people are unwilling to accept feedback and make changes.”

“Even as a Kelantanese, I avoid using public toilets in Kelantan unless it’s absolutely urgent. I’d rather go home to use the toilet.”

“As a Kelantanese, all I can say is that I agree with you. Your post is valid.”
