A 24-year-old woman has sparked discussion online after sharing how financially strained she feels while saving for marriage with her partner.
According to her post on Threads, she earns RM2,000 a month, while her 24-year-old boyfriend earns around RM6,000.
The couple are currently saving together for their wedding, but she claimed the process has affected them very differently.
Says she has to cut back on basic expenses
The woman said she has been tightening her budget so much that even eating rice every day has become something she has to think twice about.
I have to really tighten my belt, to the point where I can’t even afford to eat rice every day, while he doesn’t have to save the way I do,” she wrote.
She admitted that the situation has left her feeling deeply hurt.
“How can he be okay watching me struggle?”
What bothered her most, she said, was not simply the difference in their salaries, but the fact that she felt she was suffering more for a wedding they were both planning together.
It really hurts. It hurts a lot. How can he be okay watching me struggle to save money for our wedding?” she asked.
She said the situation made her question whether their current way of saving was fair, especially given the large difference in their incomes.
She later clarified that they were splitting everything 50-50, including the wedding gift money.
I already know my part. Even the wedding gift money is 50-50. He supposedly needs to prepare at least RM10,000 to RM15,000 for it, but bro, everything is still 50-50,” she wrote.
She added that with her salary being only about one-third of his, she felt the financial strain much more heavily.
How am I not supposed to suffer while he’s still doing fine and eating well?” she joked.
Netizens’ reaction
Netizens were divided over her situation. Some urged her to speak openly with her partner instead of automatically splitting wedding costs 50-50, adding that the couple should plan a ceremony within their means rather than chase an expensive celebration.
“Just talk to your partner directly. And don’t make 50-50 contributions the default. Have a wedding that fits your means. These days, there’s no need to make it overly grand.”
