In Malaysia, one becomes a citizen once they’ve been born on home soil thanks to the jus soli principle. However, there are some who choose to give up this right entirely.
A woman has recently sparked a heated discussion online after she posted a video of the process of her renouncing her Malaysian citizenship, which included the help of an unlikely app.
M’sian woman fills up form giving up citizenship
In a 26-second video posted by @xiaoone_ on TikTok yesterday (Nov 24), it began with her saying that she was officially stateless.
She then went on to reveal that she had gone to the High Commission of Malaysia several days ago to renounce her citizenship, which would mean that she would no longer have access to the rights and privileges of being of Malaysian.

Upon arriving there, the OP had to fill up a form, one which she admitted using Google Translate while doing so as she “had forgotten all of her Malay”.

After that, she was directed to the Consular Section, where she had to surrender her birth certificate and IDs that identified her as a Malaysian.
Despite her conscious decision to no longer be a Malaysian citizen, the OP said it was nonetheless a “sentimental” moment for her.
Three days later, she received her renunciation certificate, thus officially declaring that she was no longer a Malaysian. However, the OP didn’t reveal which country she chose to become a citizen of.

Netizens’ reactions
The clip has garnered close to 300,000 views at the time of writing along with divided reactions from netizens.
Some expressed horror at the OP’s decision to cease being a Malaysian and said that it might be one she will come to regret in the future.

On the other hand, some were supportive of her decision and applauded her for being brave enough to do so.

WeirdKaya has reached out to the OP for further comment but has yet to receive a reply at the time of writing.
