A Malaysian woman has sparked discussion online after sharing her frustration over her mother-in-law and siblings-in-law allegedly joining almost every outing she plans with her husband and child.
In a Threads post that has since gained tens of thousands of views, the woman said she often just wants to spend time outside with her small family, but her in-laws would end up coming along as well.
According to her, even after her husband told his family that they had plans and errands to run, her mother-in-law would allegedly respond by suggesting that everyone go together.
She claimed that her siblings-in-law would then simply get into the car without asking whether it was okay to join.
‘They’re all adults’
The woman said what frustrated her further was that her siblings-in-law were no longer children, adding that they were aged 26, 29 and 30.
Despite this, she claimed they would still tag along whenever she and her husband planned to go somewhere.
She also said the issue was not limited to them joining family outings.
According to her, when she and her husband wanted to shop for their own things, the siblings-in-law would allegedly complain about having to wait.
However, when the couple stopped to eat, she claimed they would watch them and make “pitiful faces”, even though they were all working adults with their own salaries.
Claimed they expected her husband to pay
The woman also alleged that her siblings-in-law were reluctant to spend their own money during these outings.
She claimed that if she and her husband were choosing something to buy, they would sometimes want the same item and expect her husband to pay for theirs too.
“I’m really at a loss over what to do with people like this,” she wrote, expressing her frustration over the situation.
Her post has since drawn reactions from netizens, with many discussing the importance of setting boundaries with extended family, especially when couples want private time with their spouse and children.
At the same time, others pointed out that expectations surrounding family outings can differ from one household to another, and that clearer communication may help avoid misunderstandings.
