A recent encounter in a maternity ward left one Malaysian woman shocked after learning that a 19-year-old mother had just given birth to her fifth child.
Initially, the woman assumed that the young mother was welcoming her first child, only to learn that it was, in fact, her fifth.
This discovery sparked a conversation about early parenthood, family planning, and societal expectations.
Initial surprise: A young mother’s 5th child
The woman was in the same maternity ward as a 19-year-old mother and initially assumed she was giving birth to her first child.
To the woman’s astonishment, the young mother’s eldest child was already six years old, and the twins she had just delivered were her fourth and fifth children.
The doctor’s concern over family planning
While in the ward, the woman overheard a conversation between the doctor and the 21-year-old husband.
The doctor allegedly scolded the husband for not planning their family, saying, “Your wife is still considered a minor at 19, but she already has five children. Don’t you feel sorry for her?”
The woman also reflected on her own early marriage at 16, having her first child at 18, and later having three more children.
I thought I was young when I had my fourth child at 24, but it turns out there are others who are even younger,” she shared.
