M’sian Worried After Husband’s Nearly RM1mil EPF Falls To RM500k In 3 Months
For many Malaysians, EPF savings are meant to provide some financial security later in life.

So when one Malaysian woman discovered that her husband had apparently used almost half of his nearly RM1 million EPF savings within just three months, she was left worried about what would happen next.

Nearly half of EPF savings allegedly gone in 3 months

According to the woman, her 55-year-old husband previously had close to RM1 million in his EPF account.

However, after gaining access to the money, the balance allegedly dropped to slightly above RM500,000 within around three months.

She explained that a large portion of the money was used to settle debts accumulated over the years.

Months before the EPF money became available, she claimed she had asked her husband roughly how much he owed and was given an estimate that led her to believe the figure was around RM200,000 to RM300,000.

However, she later discovered the actual amount involved was apparently much higher.

What frustrated her most was not simply that the money had been used.

Instead, she said she was worried that her husband himself did not seem to know exactly how much debt he had accumulated.

I’m not worried about the money itself. I’m worried about his money management.”

She also claimed that had she not asked about his EPF balance, her husband might not have told her how much had already been spent.

Claims husband previously borrowed from ah long

The woman went on to share more about her husband’s financial history.

She claimed that during their marriage, he had previously borrowed money from an ah long without telling her.

She also said he had once lost around RM500,000 in the stock market and had bought several houses in the past before eventually selling them.

According to her, one significant debt her husband recently paid was money allegedly owed to his former wife for maintenance.

She stressed that she was not necessarily angry about him settling that obligation, but remained concerned over how little clarity there seemed to be surrounding his overall finances.

The woman said her husband previously held a general manager position at a large corporation and was promoted relatively early in his career.

However, he eventually left the industry to run a business.

He has reportedly been out of the industry for more than five years and has struggled to return to employment.

The couple currently run a business together, but she claimed it only earns enough to sustain their day to day living.

Couple has 5 children and no house or takaful, wife says

Her concerns were also tied to the couple’s family commitments.

According to the woman, her husband has five children in total, including three from his previous marriage and two with her.

She said the two children they share are still young, while his other children are also still studying.

She further claimed that the family currently does not own a house and does not have a takaful plan or substantial assets aside from the remaining EPF savings.

Before discovering how much money had been used, she said she had imagined that a large portion of the EPF savings could remain untouched and potentially support them over the long term.

Now, she said she plans to review her husband’s expenses from the past three months and hopes he will preserve the remaining RM500,000 as much as possible.

“For the sake of our children,” she wrote.

Netizens divided over whether wife should be concerned

The post sparked mixed reactions online.

Some commenters argued that the EPF savings belonged to her husband and pointed out that he had used at least part of the money to settle existing debts rather than simply spending it on hobbies.

Others, however, felt her concerns were understandable given that they were married, had young children and appeared to have limited financial reserves outside of EPF.

Several also urged the couple to carefully review their spending, protect the remaining retirement savings and find another source of income rather than depending heavily on the EPF money.

Despite her frustrations, the woman clarified that she did not consider her husband a bad partner overall.

She said the couple had even attended therapy to work through some of their issues, adding that she still believed their marriage had a chance.

For her, the bigger concern was ensuring that the same financial pattern would not repeat itself.

“Everything is taken for granted,” she wrote, describing the situation as stressful.
