Recently, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) released the Employee Wages Statistics (Formal Sector) Report for the first quarter of 2023 (January to March).

The report includes wage statistics based on gender, state, sector, race and more.

Minister of Economic Affairs of Malaysia, Rafizi Ramli, took to his Facebook page to showcase the launching ceremony of the statistics report, whereas Chief Statistician, Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin presented the report.

While there was no problems with any of this, there is one aspect of the report that has since been facing scrutiny online, the fact that there is a rather glaring racial wage gap.

In the report, it is stated that the ethnic Chinese are earning the highest median monthly wage of RM4,000.

Whereas, the ethnic Indians came in at second, with a median monthly wage of RM2,500, with the Bumiputera community coming in third with a median monthly wage of RM2,200. The ‘others’ community came in last with a median monthly wage of RM2,000.

Netizens have since taken to social media to call for attention on the racial wage gap.
