Malaysian social media users recently debated whether pets should be allowed in restaurants after a picture of a man with his pet dog seated on a chair at an eatery went viral.

A Facebook user shared the image on the Facebook group 沙登吹水站 and highlighted the hygiene concerns after the man placed his pet dog on a chair next to him.

“The pet hair and saliva could contaminate the food.”

“Some customers may also be uncomfortable or allergic to the hair and dander, especially children.”

The fear of dogs was also highlighted, and the social media user said the dog’s presence at the eatery in Serdang could cause discomfort to other diners.

She also claimed that the man got upset about being confronted and allegedly stood up before threatening to throw the chair at her.

“This is rude and embarrassing,” she remarked.

Netizens were divided on the matter, with some defending the man while others expressed concerns about hygiene issues

“Many pet owners will bring their dogs and put them in trolleys. If you don’t like it, I personally think you shouldn’t care too much, especially when the premise owner doesn’t say anything about it. I don’t agree with him putting the dog on the chair, would’ve been better if he had a trolley.”

“Serdang? Dogs are wandering everywhere at restaurants in the area. If you’re a clean freak, then stay at home. Why are you afraid of such a cute dog?”

“If the boss of the restaurant didn’t object, then it should be okay. If you’re not okay, then run your own restaurant and put up a ‘no animals’ sign.”

“If the place is not pet-friendly, then it’s unreasonable.”

Meanwhile, a netizen reminded dog lovers to be considerate of others and said it would be better to avoid bringing furry animals to eateries.

“Let’s save the premise owner the inconvenience. If you’re rational, you won’t bring your pet dog.”

“The chair is meant for customers, not dogs. The place is not your house just because you’re a paying customer.”

What do you think of this? Do you think pets should be allowed at eateries?
