M’sians Envious After Viral Video Shows Japanese High Schoolers Visiting a Sekolah Menengah in KL

An awesome cultural exchange programme which saw Japanese high schoolers visiting a Malaysian secondary school went viral online recently, garnering over 886,000 views and more than 97,900 likes on TikTok as of the time of writing.

Shared by @suzu_malaysia, a Japanese teacher currently plying her trade in our country, the cultural exchange programme has received praise from Malaysians, with some also expressing jealousy that such a programme never took place at their schools.

In the video, a group of Japanese high schoolers can be seen visiting SMK Cochrane in Kuala Lumpur and taking part in various activities to further learn about Malaysian culture and how the schooling system in our country works.

At the start of the video, the Japanese high schoolers are taken around the school and can be seen waving at their Malaysian counterparts inside their classrooms.

Afterwards, they engaged in several activities, including trying out webbing traditional Anyaman, eating chicken rice with their new Malaysian friends, and watching traditional Malaysian dances by the school performers.

Besides that, the Japanese students also taught their Malaysian counterparts about Japanese traditional games and played the games together afterwards.

Jealous Malaysians rue that their schools never participated in such programmes

In the comments section, many Malaysians were awed by the cultural exchange programme and were jealous that their schools didn’t participate in them while they were studying.

One commenter who’s an SPM 2023 graduate from SMK Cochrane was especially affected as the cultural exchange programme happened after he finished school there.

Meanwhile, another commenter joked that those who skipped school on that particular day must be cursing their luck.
