Running has become quite a trend among Malaysians this year, with running clubs and community workouts bringing fitness enthusiasts together.
However, the recent haze has made outdoor activities less ideal, especially for those who regularly go for morning or evening runs.
While some have chosen to take a break from outdoor exercise, a group of Malaysians was recently spotted getting their steps in at a rather unexpected location.
Turning a shopping mall into a running spot
In a video shared by Sunway Square Mall on Instagram, a large group of people could be seen jogging and exercising together inside the mall.
The mall was filled with people in sportswear, running shoes and workout gear early in the morning.
The activity was part of Mall-Miles, an indoor fitness experience organised by Sunway Malls through Squrrel Active Club, in partnership with Flow Forward Collective.
The running session lasted approximately 30 minutes, with participants jogging together along the mall’s walkways.
A different way to stay active amid the haze
The event comes at a time when Malaysia has been experiencing hazy conditions, raising concerns among those who frequently exercise outdoors.
The Ministry of Health has advised Malaysians to avoid outdoor activities when the Air Pollutant Index (API) exceeds 100, as the air quality is considered unhealthy.
For regular runners, this can mean having to change their usual routines or look for other places to exercise.
Those who missed the session at Sunway Square Mall may get another chance to experience it.
According to the organiser, the next Mall-Miles session is scheduled to take place at Sunway Velocity Mall on 31 October.
As running continues to gain popularity in Malaysia, the sight of people exercising inside shopping malls might become a little more common.
