M’sians Travelling to Thailand Can Now Get Up to RM133k Insurance Coverage for FREE From Thai Govt

Despite being the most-visited Southeast Asian country by international tourists last year, Thailand is not resting on its laurels and is further improving its tourism industry to attract travellers.

These include improving the country’s VAT refund process for travellers and introducing a new 90-day “Muay Thai visa” option for tourists.

 

Assistance Scheme for Foreign Tourist Injury and Casualty

Now, the Thailand government has also introduced a new initiative to safeguard the safety of international tourists in the country by offering a new insurance scheme covering injuries and deaths for FREE!

Applicable for foreign tourists, including Malaysians, the scheme provides the following coverage:

  • Up to THB500,000 or approximately RM66,530 medical coverage in case of accidental injuries
  • Up to THB300,000 or RM39,918 compensation in case of permanent organ loss, loss of sight or permanent disability
  • Up to THB1 million or RM133,060 in the case of death

Under the initiative, for any cases of accidents, crimes and other emergencies in Thailand experienced by tourists, the Thai government will provide initial assistance and support medical expenses. Furthermore, in the event of death, compensation is provided. However, all cases must comply with Thai laws and regulations.

In a press release by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the nation’s Minister of Tourism and Sports Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol announced that the Thai government has allocated THB50 million or RM6.65 million for the initiative.

Moreover, she also said that the scheme, named the “Assistance Scheme for Foreign Tourist Injury and Casualty”, was part of her Ministry’s ongoing efforts to assure tourist safety and boost tourist confidence in the country.

Requirements and how to register for the scheme

In order to be available for the scheme, tourists must have valid passports and are visiting Thailand between 1 January to 31 August 2024.

Moreover, tourists must have valid “non-work” passports and a tourist visa. As for citizens of countries and territories who may enter Thailand under the Tourist Visa Exemption Scheme such as Malaysia, they must visit the country for tourism purposes only.

In order to register, you only need to head over to the scheme’s official website here and sign up online. If you’re travelling with your family or in a group, you can register for the scheme simultaneously for up to 10 people.
