Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah has announced that Malaysians can expect a new generation of MyKad with enhanced biometric security features in the near future.

Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, Shamsul Anuar said amendments to the National Registration Act 1959 (Act 78) will allow the National Registration Department (NRD) to record three types of biometric data:

  • 10 fingerprints
  • Iris scans
  • Facial scans

He explained that the changes are necessary to strengthen national identification systems and ensure data security and confidentiality.

New MyKad on the way

The Deputy Minister revealed that the Home Ministry and NRD are already planning to roll out the next-generation MyKad, which will replace the current version that has been in circulation since 2012.

According to him, the upgraded identity card will come with stronger security features to prevent forgery, misuse, and identity theft, while also keeping pace with the latest technology.

The announcement comes after Shamsul Anuar wound up the debate on the National Registration (Amendment) Bill 2025, which was passed by voice vote in Parliament today.

The government believes the move will not only protect Malaysians’ personal data but also ensure that the MyKad remains a trusted and secure form of identification well into the future.
