In the latest development regarding ongoing investigations into assets, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has clarified that there are currently no plans to summon Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad for questioning. Despite the continued scrutiny surrounding Dr Mahathir's assets, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki emphasized that the focus remains on ongoing investigative efforts rather than immediate detainment.
Speaking to reporters at the launch of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy in Putrajaya, Azam Baki underscored the agency's stance, indicating that while investigations are progressing, there is no imminent intention to detain Dr. Mahathir. This statement comes amidst earlier orders issued by the MACC in January to Dr Mahathir's sons, Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir and Mirzan Mahathir, mandating them to declare their accumulated wealth dating back to Dr Mahathir's tenure as prime minister.
The directive aimed at Dr Mahathir's sons was part of the MACC's broader efforts to scrutinize potential instances of wealth accumulation linked to individuals in positions of power. However, the MACC has refrained from immediate action against Dr Mahathir himself, opting instead to continue with the investigative process.
In response to the MACC order, Mokhzani and Mirzan issued a joint statement, expressing their willingness to cooperate with the investigation while vehemently denying any allegations of impropriety. They asserted that the investigation was centred on determining whether Dr Mahathir had abused his position as prime minister to benefit them financially. Both sons emphasized their commitment to demonstrating the legitimacy of their earnings and insisted that their wealth was acquired through lawful means.
Under Section 36(1)(b) of the MACC Act 2009, the MACC possesses the authority to compel individuals with questionable wealth to declare their assets. Despite multiple extensions granted to Dr Mahathir's sons to comply with the directive, the investigation into their father's assets remains ongoing.
Dr Mahathir himself had previously voiced concerns over what he perceived as politically motivated actions against his family members. In particular, he suggested that his son had become a target of retribution by the current government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Dr Mahathir's allegations of political vendetta echo broader tensions within Malaysia's political landscape, underscoring the complexities surrounding corruption investigations and their potential ramifications.
