Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil has stated that the contract extension for Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Azam Baki has yet to be discussed by Putrajaya. Azam's tenure is set to end on May 12, 2023, and he has faced controversy during his time in office. Some Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders have alleged that the MACC has been misused by previous governments to target opposition politicians, and such claims have continued during Azam's term. Additionally, Azam was previously investigated over allegations related to his ownership of shares and warrants. Despite calls for his replacement, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim defended his decision not to replace Azam, citing MACC's status as an independent body and his desire to break the convention of a change of guard with a new prime minister.

The information was provided to reporters by the Minister at the Malaysia Madani Raya Aidilfitri Open House at Hotel Raia.

Azam was appointed chief after he replaced Latheefa Koya on March 09, 2020. He is the 6th CC of MACC since March 2020. He joined the Anti Corruption Agency back in 1984 and through the years he became Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations) in 2016 before posting as Chief Commissioner in 2020.

While his recent controversaries have made news headlines, here are some of his awards he has been entitled to during his service;

  • Member of The Most Illustrious Order of Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang
  • Member of The Most Distinguished Order of the Defender of the Realm
  • Knight Companion of The Esteemed Order of the Crown of Pahang
  • Companion Class I of the Exalted Order of Malacca
  • Knight Companion of The Most Illustrious Order of Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang
  • Commander of The Distinguished Order of Meritorious Service
  • Grand Knight of The Most Illustrious Order of Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang
