The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has determined that there is no legal wrongdoing in the awarding of the Demand Responsive Transit (DRT) pilot project contract by the Selangor government, which was awarded to a company associated with Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh's husband. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki clarified that the commission found no evidence of misconduct in this case.
Addressing the media, Tan Sri Azam Baki stated, "From a legal perspective, if an individual receives a contract or benefit from a government entity without any connection to the duties and responsibilities of a related party, it does not constitute an offence." He emphasized that in this instance, the contract awarded to Hannah Yeoh's husband by the Selangor government is separate from her ministerial role. "The key issue is the separation of roles. If the Ministry of Youth and Sports had awarded the contract, it would be a different matter entirely," he explained during a press conference following the Malaysian Electricity Asset Management and Governance Coordination Improvement Report signing ceremony.
The event was also attended by Datuk Abdul Razib Dawood, CEO of the Energy Commission, and Datuk Ir. Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan, CEO of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).
Last week, Ng Sze Han, Chairman of the Selangor Investment, Trade and Mobility Committee, announced that Asia Mobility Technologies Sdn Bhd was one of two companies selected for the DRT pilot project. The DRT initiative is a significant state government effort aimed at enhancing public transportation and mobility services within Selangor. The project is part of broader efforts to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of public transit options for residents.
The MACC's investigation into the contract's awarding process followed media reports that highlighted the involvement of Hannah Yeoh's husband. Despite the public and media scrutiny, the MACC's findings have reinforced the legality and transparency of the process. "We have thoroughly examined the procedures and found no link to any improper influence or conflict of interest," Azam Baki reiterated.
The DRT pilot project is expected to bring substantial improvements to Selangor's public transport system by providing a more flexible and responsive transit service. By leveraging modern technology, the DRT system aims to better meet the needs of commuters and reduce reliance on private vehicles, contributing to a more sustainable urban environment.
