The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained 13 additional vehicle inspection officers suspected of being part of a syndicate involved in approving heavy vehicle inspections unlawfully. These arrests occurred at a vehicle inspection center in the nation's capital.

According to reliable sources, the suspects, all male and aged between 20 and 40, were apprehended during two separate operations. The first arrests took place between 1 pm and 2 pm yesterday, while the second round occurred between 10 am and 3 pm today, as the individuals presented themselves at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya to provide testimony.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects allegedly received bribes ranging from RM150 to RM1,500 monthly from intermediaries, commonly referred to as "runners." These payments were purportedly made in exchange for facilitating the approval of vehicle inspections at the suspects' respective workplaces.

The arrests of these 13 officers come in the wake of an earlier operation that saw six vehicle inspectors detained last Monday. These developments stem from interrogations conducted by the MACC on an agent previously handed over by the Road Transport Department (JPJ), as part of the commission's broader efforts to dismantle corruption within vehicle inspection processes.

To date, the MACC has arrested a total of 22 individuals linked to this syndicate. Among those detained are 19 vehicle inspection officers, one agent, and two runners. This comprehensive crackdown reflects the agency's determination to root out corruption in sectors critical to public safety and accountability.

Commenting on the case, MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations) Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya confirmed the arrests and outlined the ongoing investigation. He revealed that the case is being investigated under Section 16(b)(A) of the MACC Act 2009, which pertains to the solicitation and acceptance of bribes.

Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi also stated that the 13 vehicle inspection officers apprehended over the past two days would be released on MACC bail following the completion of their statements. This measure ensures their cooperation with the investigation while maintaining procedural fairness.

The operation underscores the MACC's commitment to addressing corruption comprehensively and restoring public confidence in essential services such as vehicle inspections. By targeting individuals and dismantling syndicates engaged in corrupt practices, the MACC aims to send a strong message that bribery and misconduct will not be tolerated.

This latest series of arrests highlights the need for continued vigilance and enforcement to ensure integrity within Malaysia’s vehicle inspection system. The MACC’s efforts not only uphold the rule of law but also contribute to enhancing road safety and accountability within the transportation sector. The ongoing investigation is expected to uncover further details and possibly implicate additional parties in this growing case.
