In a recent development, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has taken a significant step by requesting businessman Mirzan Mahathir to disclose his assets. Mirzan, who is the son of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, was personally present at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya, where he received a notice under Section 36(1)(b) of the MACC Act 2009. This section compels Mirzan to declare all his assets within 30 days from the date of the notice, irrespective of whether they are currently in his possession.

The MACC clarified in a statement today that this move is a follow-up action stemming from its investigation into information found in the Panama Papers, particularly focusing on Mirzan's business dealings. These dealings involve the sale and purchase of government-linked companies, prompting the commission to take a closer look.

The investigation, initiated by the MACC in August 2022, encompasses all entities and associated assets mentioned in both the Pandora Papers and Panama Papers leaks. The Pandora Papers, leaked in 2021, exposed nearly 12 million documents that implicated numerous global elites in alleged tax avoidance and corruption. On the other hand, the Panama Papers, published in 2016, contained 11.5 million leaked documents revealing financial and attorney-client information for over 214,488 offshore entities.

So far, the MACC has called in 10 witnesses to record their statements. Currently, the commission is meticulously reviewing financial documents and scrutinizing the ownership of assets linked to the entities named in the reports. The investigation remains ongoing as the MACC endeavors to unveil the truth behind the alleged wrongdoings.

In a related development last week, the MACC also questioned Toh Puan Naimah Khalid, wife of former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, and their two sons regarding family assets. This inquiry is part of the broader probe into the financial affairs of individuals named in the leaked papers. Tun Daim and his family have taken legal action by filing for a judicial review in court, challenging the constitutionality of the investigation.

As the MACC diligently pursues its investigation, it is evident that the focus extends beyond Mirzan Mahathir to include other prominent figures, reinforcing the commission's commitment to uncovering corruption and illicit financial activities. The MACC's actions underscore the gravity of the situation and the importance of accountability, ensuring that those implicated in the leaked papers are held responsible for their actions.

In conclusion, the MACC's recent demand for Mirzan Mahathir to declare his assets is a pivotal development in its ongoing investigation. The commission's thorough examination of the Panama Papers and Pandora Papers reflects a determined effort to address corruption and financial improprieties at the highest levels. As the inquiry progresses, the public eagerly awaits further revelations, anticipating a clearer understanding of the extent of alleged wrongdoings and the individuals involved.
