Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim openly questioned the opposition’s continued dissatisfaction with the investigation involving his former Senior Political Secretary, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin. During the Prime Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat, he remarked that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had already taken visible, firm action, and insisted that no preferential treatment had been extended.
He pointed out that the investigation was being handled entirely by MACC, noting that Shamsul had appeared in handcuffs and the standard orange detention attire during the process. He suggested that such measures clearly indicated that MACC had acted without leniency, yet the opposition continued to press for more. He questioned what further action critics were expecting, stressing that he had never interfered with the commission’s work or attempted to shield any individual.
Anwar emphasised that he had no reason to defend anyone involved in wrongdoing and that the authorities had been given full independence to carry out the investigation. His comments came as a response to a question regarding whether stricter internal audits would be enforced within ministerial offices following the controversy.
The issue gained traction after Shamsul Iskandar stepped down from his position last Friday. His resignation was framed as a step to prevent political attacks from harming the image of the Madani Government. He had stated that the situation had escalated to a point where remaining in office could potentially undermine the administration.
Anwar reiterated that the government had always encouraged transparency and had never blocked anti-corruption enforcement from pursuing any case, including those involving individuals within the administration. He maintained that all agencies were empowered to conduct investigations without political pressure or interference.
The Prime Minister also noted that internal oversight mechanisms already exist within ministries and that these processes would continue to operate as part of ensuring accountability among officials. The resignation, he indicated, should not be misinterpreted as an attempt to avoid scrutiny but rather a proactive step to protect the credibility of the government.
The exchange highlighted ongoing political friction within Parliament, with the opposition attempting to keep pressure on the administration over matters of integrity. Anwar, however, continued to insist that the rule of law remains intact and that the investigative process against his former aide is being carried out openly and professionally.
