A senior official from a federal agency in Kelantan is expected to face legal action over alleged corruption, abuse of power, and false claims, according to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki announced that the director, who is nearing retirement, will be charged soon after the Deputy Public Prosecutor finalizes and agrees to the proposed charges submitted by the Kelantan MACC branch. While the individual’s name was not disclosed, the case is anticipated to move forward within the next few weeks, or possibly sooner.

Speaking at a press conference held in Kota Baru during the handover ceremony between the outgoing Kelantan MACC director Rosli Husain and his successor Azmin Yusoff, Azam emphasized the importance of maintaining integrity within public service. He noted that if someone in a leadership position is implicated in criminal activities, it undermines their ability to lead and erodes public trust.

The chief commissioner reiterated MACC’s broader strategy to tackle systemic leakages in public administration. This approach, which has been in effect for some time, prioritizes addressing corruption at all levels by targeting key players and ensuring transparency and accountability in public spending.

Azam, who previously served in Kelantan from 1989 to 2000, observed that the landscape of governance in the state has evolved significantly. He stated that MACC’s ongoing mission must also evolve, calling for refined methods in enforcement, prevention, and public education. For real impact to be felt by the community, he said, anti-corruption efforts must be visible, strategic, and supported by a skilled and experienced workforce.

He stressed that this upcoming prosecution should serve as a reminder and deterrent to others in civil service. Highlighting the case as an example, he stated that officers found guilty of such misconduct not only fail in their duties but also diminish the credibility of the institutions they represent.

The MACC chief confirmed that the investigation into the director’s alleged misconduct has concluded, and further details on the charges will be made public in due course. The development marks another step in the agency’s continuing efforts to strengthen integrity and combat corruption in the public sector.
